This Holy Week we will be considering the 7 things Jesus said at the Cross, as recorded in scripture. We will seek to understand what this shows us about Jesus and how we can walk in His way as redeemed and loved children of God.

Day 7

Read from Luke 23:44-46

It was now about the sixth hour (noon), and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.), because the sun was obscured; and the veil [of the Holy of Holies] of the temple was torn in two [from top to bottom]. And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit! Having said this, He breathed His last.

Consider these ideas and questions. Make observations of your own. Journal as you go:

  • This statement is another call back to a Psalm of David. This time Psalm 31, which is a psalm of deliverance about trusting God as refuge and rescue. In saying Into your hands I commit my spirit, Jesus is showing his utter and complete dependence on God.
  • Despite the circumstances around Him Jesus entrusted His life, His soul, and His future to God, His Father.
  • What is happening in or around you right now where you would like to trust God as your Rock, refuge and deliverer?
  • The faithfulness of God is what made David, Jesus and later Stephen (who uttered this same declaration of dependence as he was being stoned to death in Luke 23:46) able to completely trust God in the midst of suffering. Recall God’s faithfulness to you. If you are in a season where it is difficult to remember, ask God to remind you so you can keep his faithfulness always near to your mind and heart.
  • Read Psalm 31:1-24 in it’s entirety. Personalize it as a prayer to God.

Respond:
Read the scripture passage again. Consider what you journaled. Consider what you noticed about the passage that wasn’t mentioned above.
Find quiet and slow your mind and your breathing.  Ask God to meet with you exactly where you are and just be with Him.
