Helps to Engage Scripture
Here are some ideas to help you memorize, mediate on and engage these promises from God and all of God’s Word:
Personalize the Promises
“Because He lives, I can. (Believe)
Because He lives, I will. (Do/Apply)
Because He lives, I pray.” (Talk to God)
Doug taught us this one in his Easter message.
- Pick out a promise from Scripture.
- Make the connection that because Jesus lives the promise is true.
- Write: Because He lives, I can… Because He lives, I will… Because He lives, I pray…
- Then actually pray over what you’ve written, asking God to grow your faith and move in your life.
EXAMPLES:
- Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Because He lives I can…find and know God, so I will seek Him with all of my heart. - James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given him.
Because He lives I can… ask God for wisdom and know He will give it. So I will…seek it out and live it out. - Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Because He lives…Know that I am not condemned, I am redeemed, forgiven, free, and a child of God. - Matthew 28:20 And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Because He lives I can…know that I am never alone, God is with me, and I can depend on Him. - 2 Peter 1:3 “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
Because He lives I can…I have everything I need for a godly life. I have Him and He has me. - Philippians 4:19 “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus
Because He lives I can…trust Him to provide everything I need for life. - 1 Timothy 6:19 …but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
Because He lives, I can…Trust Him to provide everything I need to enjoy life. - 2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
Because He lives I can…Acknowledge and thrive in my weaknesses because of God’s grace and power at work in me.
Memorize Through Acrostic
Commit a promise to memory! One helpful way is to put the first letter of each word of the scripture on a small post-it note. Place the note where you will see it often. This technique jogs your brain by giving you the first letter of the words that compose the promise. Soon enough, you will have it memorized!
Breath Prayer
Breath prayer is a simple practice that involves combining a short prayer phrase with the rhythm of your breath, typically inhaling and exhaling with different parts of the prayer. You can use a passage of scripture as a breath prayer. This helps focus your mind to connect with God and can be done throughout the day.
Example using Psalm 68:19 Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.
- Quiet your mind. Close your eyes and breathe in and out steadily until you sense calm and focus.
- Then Breath in: Praise be to God, my Savior
- Exhale: Who daily bears my burdens
- Sit still and repeat this, meditating and focusing your heart and mind, for a minute or two or as long as you like.
- Come back to this prayer during pockets of your day when you have a few minutes
Use MOtions
Don’t forget that your children, your nieces and nephews, your mini-BFF’s, can engage scripture too. Sometimes coming up with motions that go with the words of scripture can help lock it in. It works for young and old alike. Here is an example of how Tree House Club is going to memorize their verse this month:
“In this world you will have trouble. But be encouraged! I have won the battle over the world.”
John 16:33b NIRV
o “In this world (Make a large circle with your index finger.)
o you will have trouble. (Stomp your feet like you’re facing a challenge.)
o But be encouraged! (High-five someone in your group.)
o I have won the battle (“Fist pump” or “victory pose.”)
o over the world.” (Jump with arms outstretched wide.)
o John 16:33b (Open and close hands like a book.)
Listening Prayer
- Find a place of quiet and calm.
- Read your scripture passage.
- Close your eyes and focus on the God who loves you and wants to commune with you.
- Ask Him what He wants you to know about the passage. Ask Him to help you understand it and internalize it.
- Sit quietly and just listen.
- This is not an easy practice in our chaotic, digital, instant world. Be patient. Give it time and don’t give up.
- Sometimes listening to instrumental music can help quiet and focus us. FIND A PLAYLIST HERE
