What days of the week can I serve?
There are people serving at Live Oak on Sunday mornings (some in Kids Ministry with our babies- 5th graders and others on First Impressions), folks that serve on Tuesday nights with college ministry, and people who serve on Wednesday nights when our student ministry meets. We even have people that serve from home helping us keep up with administrative tasks.
I haven't been at Live Oak long. Can I serve?
The short answer is yes! The longer answer…
If you want to serve in what is called a Leading Role we will ask that you have been at Live Oak for at least 6 months. In other roles, called Serving Role, you will be able to on-ramp sooner.
We will help you along with this as you figure out where you’d like to serve. Sometimes those who really want to serve in a Leading Role but have not been at Live Oak for 6 months will serve as a “shadow” in the interim.
Are volunteers background checked?
Live Oak background checks all volunteers over the age of 18, even if they do not serve in a Next Gen area. We do this out of an abundance of caution and also bc of our building layout (which leads to proximity to Next Gen areas no matter where you serve).
Can children serve?
Absolutely! We have children as young as 3rd grade serving. MANY in the next generation serve as student leaders for Kids Ministry, worship leaders, tech team members and First Impressions.
How can I figure out where to serve?
With ALL roles, you will be offered a shadow session or two where you can go into the environment you’re interested in and be a fly on the wall to observe and see if that’s where you might want to serve. You can shadow in multiple areas knowing that shadowing is not a commitment but part of the discovery process.
Will I need to serve every week?
This all depends on where you serve. Some roles are once or twice a month. Other roles are weekly, such as being a Small Group Leader. You can communicate your desired frequency in our Serving Interest Form.
What is involved in on-ramping into a role?
With such a variety of volunteer roles, what might be helpful for you to know is that your on-ramp process into serving is going to be different depending on your role. For example, if you’re wanting to on-ramp into a Leadership Role you’ll need to know that process is going to be longer and more extensive, and we are going to ask that you have been at Live Oak at least six months before you consider a role like that. Other roles, such as being a greeter on First Impressions, have a quicker on-ramp process.
Every volunteer will be asked to complete our Online Next Steps Class as a prerequesite to serving, and those over 18 years old will need to complete a background check. We ask that these be completed within 2 weeks from the submission of your form.
With ALL roles you will be offered a shadow session or two where you can go into the environment you’re interested in and be a fly on the wall and observe and see if that’s where you might want to serve. You can shadow in multiple areas.
Key Scriptures Related to Serving:
Philippians 2:3–8 – Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Colossians 3:23-24 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
1 Peter 4:10–11
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Galatians 5:13-14 – For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
John 13:12–15 – When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Romans 12:6–13 – We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
