Week 10: The Work of the Counselor – John 15:26-16:15

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to His disciples and to us.  The Holy Spirit was promised to empower us and engage with us in various ways.  How will we engage with the Holy Spirit?

LIVE OAK CONNECTION POINT:
Serving might just be your next step! There is a FIT for everyone and you can get started finding your fit by visiting Sign Up & Events or right here.

DISCUSSION/REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  • Who is someone in your life (past or present) that has been an encourager?
  • Who is someone in your life (past or present) that has been a truth teller?
  • What do you think of when you hear the phrase “Holy Spirit”?

This week Doug focused on the passages from the Upper Room teachings of Jesus about the Holy Spirit.  Jesus said that it was good that He was going away and pointed to the Holy Spirit as the reason why.  This week we focused on who the Holy Spirit is, how He engages with us and how we engage with Him.

READ the following passages one at a time and answer the following questions:

·      Observations: What are the things that stand out to you about this passage?

  • What does this passage tell me about who the Holy Spirit is? (Look for titles and define what those title may mean and what the Holy spirit does)
  • What does this passage tell me about the role the holy Spirit plays in my life and in the life of others?

John 14:15-18

John 14:25-27

John 15:26-27

John 16:1-17

  • What questions does this raise for you about the Holy Spirit?

READ: 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.  What does it mean that we are “temples of the Holy Spirit”?

READ: Galatians 5:16. What do you think it means to “walk in the Spirit”?

READ: Acts 1:4-8. What are your observations about this passage?

Doug said that these passages show us some of the “rules of engagement” for the Holy Spirit with us. Doug asked: “What are YOUR rules of engagement with the Holy Spirit?”   How will you be intentional about engaging with the Holy Spirit daily…moment by moment?

  • What else stood out from this week’s sermon?
  • APPLICATION: What is your big takeaway from this week’s sermon?  Be specific.

***HOMEWORK*** THIS WEEK:   Read these passages more…& add Romans 8.

MEMORY VERSE: *Challenge yourself or your group to commit this verse to memory:

John 16:7 “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”

Spend some time praying for each other.

Read this verse as part of your prayer for your group:

Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
